Members of Witham Twinning Association recently welcomed friends from our twin town of Waldbröl in Germany from 15th – 19th September when they came for their annual visit to our town.

The 2017 visit was organised slightly later than usual so that our friends from Waldbröl could join us at Witham’s annual Puppet festival.  After spending the first evening getting to know or, in many cases, catching up with their hosts in Witham, our visitors joined in the fun at this popular event which was held on Saturday 16th September this year.  With “Under the Sea” as the theme for this year’s Puppet festival, our friends came face to face with a host of pirates, mermaids and sea creatures as they explored the town.  The firm favourites among the group though were Titan the Robot and the dancing ladies sat on their trolleys!

That evening Witham Twinning Association was pleased to formally welcome our guests and their host families at the traditional Social evening at the Royal British Legion Memorial Hall in Witham.  With a buffet supper on offer, the relaxed setting once again provided a good opportunity for old and new friends alike to share stories and experiences.

The Association then organised the traditional visit to London on the Sunday.  A variety of walking tours around the main attractions were available to join for those who had not been to London before.  Another group went to the Imperial War Museum while others chose to explore the city’s many sights independently or made the most of the excellent shopping.  With plenty of opportunity for free time, the visit once again proved to be a big success.

On Monday 18th September, the group visited Maldon before travelling on to Tiptree where a warm welcome awaited them at the famous jam factory.  A special tour of the farm was arranged for the group aboard a “tractor train”.  With German and English-speaking guides on hand, the group were fascinated at the techniques Tiptree uses to grow the fruit for their products all year round.  Our guests then enjoyed sampling the jam over a traditional English afternoon tea in the café.  A good supply of Tiptree jam was on board the coach the following day as the group said their good byes to their friends in Witham before setting off on their journey back to Waldbröl!  It will be sold at the Christmas market in Waldbröl in a couple of months time.

Witham Twinning Association would like to thank every one who helped to make the visit such a success and particularly all the hosts.
